It never ceases to amaze me what people can do with a concept when given creative freedom. Damon Motorcoach of Elkhart, Indiana, has just released their new Class A drivable toyhauler. Appropriately named the Outlaw, this new rig has broken all the rules with three industry changing designs. So with that we are going to go straight to the first and most unique feature on this toyhauler.
The primary sleeping area is a loft, located above the garage, in the rear of the coach, which has a staircase with full size steps for easy access. Think about that! We’re talking about a motor home with a rear loft over the garage! This is a completely new concept for the interior design of a motor home. The loft itself is huge, spanning the full 8 foot width of the rig. The queen memory foam mattress could easily be upgraded to a king if desired. A row of cabinets also spans the full eight feet. And to keep you entertained in your new penthouse, there is a flat panel TV. Unlike the lofts in their towable cousins, Damon has incorporated a set of full-size steps to get you into the loft, curing one of the most inconvenient things about lofts and cab-overs, ACCESS! No more flimsy aluminum ladders or leaps to the floor, the steps provide a very “sure” way in and out of the loft. They even used the extra space under the steps for storage. That’s two on the innovation meter. While we are on the interior, the best way to describe the look is classy. It has a giant slide, which really opens up the room and the couch doubles as a hide-a-bed. But it has an air mattress rather than the old foam mattresses. The dinette also converts to a bed, with the usual storage under each bunk. The fabric colors are neutral and there is an additional leather covered lounger with ottoman that you’re sure to fall asleep on watching the 27” flat panel TV. The kitchen has a stove with oven, microwave, double bowl sink and large refrigerator.
The drivers compartment has leather seating which is very comfortable and both seats rotate to face the inside of the coach. The dashboard is clean and all the controls are easily accessible. In addition it has a built-in monitor for the back-up camera.
Now on to our favorite part and innovation number three. The garage! It measures in at 8’wide by 10’ 4” deep. It’s very clean with black non-slip flooring, overhead cabinets and for your viewing pleasure a 13” flat panel TV. But, the innovation comes in the form of the ramp. The patent pending design uses a pneumatic lift system that allows the large ramp to just glide to the ground with one-person operation. It also had a ramp extender to provide an even more shallow loading angle. The best part is there is no need for a lift to get your toys loaded. You will be able to refill your favorite toy with the on-board fuel station.
From the outside, this coach also looks great. It has that “wedged” look of a toyhauler with Alcoa rims and Goodyear tires. The power plant is an 8.1l Vortec V-8 and is available on the Ford 22,000 pound chassis or the 24,000 pound Workhorse. You also get a one touch leveling system and of course we wouldn’t want to forget that you could still pull a trailer. The 5000 pound receiver should take care of that.
