Summertime Check-Up!

With summer quickly approaching, it’s time to double check all the running gear on your rig to ensure trouble-free road trips. Whether you’re a midwesterner or east coast dweller just digging out of a long heavy winter or a west coast dunner getting ready for the lake, there are a few things that are a “must check” at this time of year. Start with a nice slow walk around your rig. Look for any thing that is obviously loose or hanging. Don’t be afraid to wiggle and giggle the different doors, etc. Remember, you will be heading down the freeway or down washboard dirt roads, so if the accessory can’t handle the “wiggle test” just sitting there, it certainly won’t handle the road. It’s funny how using or not using a toyhauler, things can just loosen up. Also, take a look under the trailer. You’re looking for wires hanging, noticeable amounts of corrosion on connectors, and, while you’re down there, inspect the inside of the tires. It’s just as likely for a tire to have issues that are not noticeable from the outside of the tire. Speaking of tires, really take a good look at the pressure, tread, and especially the sidewalls. It’s been our experience that you will rarely use all the tread on a trailer tire, but the sidewall is supporting all the weight of the unit. Imagine your rig was covered with two feet of wet snow; can you imagine how much weight that would add! And don’t forget to check the spare. It’s a bit of a pain, but a bad spare is bad news. You guys get the idea: it’s that time of year to take a few extra minutes to make sure you and yours have a safe, trouble-free summer.
