EZ Connector Trailer Plug
It happened to me, and it’s bound to happen to you, too. You’re in a rush to set up camp and you forget to disconnect the umbilical cord from the trailer. If you’re lucky, it’ll just plug back in. But, if you’re as unlucky as I am, you have to go shopping for a new cord.
I could’ve gone down to the local RV parts store, but I was looking for something different, something better and easier to connect. So, after a little Internet search, I stumbled across EZ Connector, a manufacturer of a unique magnetic “quick-disconnect” trailer plug that was billed as the last trailer plug you will ever have to buy. Instead of using the conventional blade style push-on connection, the EZ Connector uses powerful magnets and spring loaded contacts to make the connection. I was very intrigued by this, as I’ve frequently had problems with my conventional plug making a good connection.
The EZ Connector replaces both the trailer and truck side of the connection, comes in various lengths and two types: a hard-wired version and one with a T-connector that plugs into your truck’s existing wiring. The latter, which is what I chose, is easier to install and remove, should you decide to sell the truck.
Installation is pretty straightforward. Starting with the truck, locate a spot either on your bumper (for a conventional bumper pull trailer) or inside your bed (for a 5th wheel) that is close to your truck’s existing wiring, using the cable length as your guide. If you have a bumper pull trailer, use the supplied bracket to mount the female end of the plug. For the 5-er, you’ve got a little more work to do. You will need to drill a 2-1/4 in. hole in the truck bed making sure it’s close to the existing plug. Again, use the cable length as your guide. Next, unplug the existing wiring harness from the back of the stock plug, plug the T-connector in and re-install the stock plug. Mount the female side of the magnetic plug to the bed and you’re done with the truck.
Connecting the trailer side is much easier and just a matter of locating your existing wire box and tapping in. I chose to keep the existing plug attached, in case another truck was ever needed to tow my trailer.
Once I got it installed, I couldn’t wait to test it out. I was particularly curious about how much force was needed to disconnect the two halves. Well, let me just put it this way. When you get the two halves close to each other, just make sure your fingers aren’t in the way. With that said, they’re not so strong that they’re difficult to separate, just strong enough to keep them connected. Another cool feature is the double O-ring seal on the male end that keeps moisture from entering into the connection.
I am very happy with my EZ Connector. The ease of hookup is now effortless and I no longer worry about losing power to my trailer while towing. The quality is top-notch and the installation instructions are very detailed. The bumper pull kit retails for $99 and the 5th wheel version for $109. Add $20 if you want the T-connector. I highly recommend it.
