The battle to tie-down your toys is a neverending one it seems. Quads and cars are tough but half the battle is already over since they’re on four wheels. The two-wheeler however is a completely different animal.
It’s not only the damage to the bike but also to the trailer, and other toys, as I recently found out. I returned from my last trip to find the glass on the front of my oven smashed and a nice new scratch on my golf cart. Not good.
There are several products on the market. The latest is the FastRack by Hellwig Suspension Accessories of California. Known for their tow vehicle suspension systems (a story for another issue) owner Mark Hellwig also happens to be a desert motorcycle rider. His family is always along for the ride and over the years he has even introduced some of his exchange students to the off-road life style.
An engineer at heart, Mark set out to build a removable rack to strap his motorcycles to. What he has developed is a removable rack that ranges in size from 36 inches to 72 inches. Each unit is fully adjustable both up and down and side to side so you can make-up for lower fenders, taller wheels, etc.
A flush mount plate is secured to the floor using a very unique Allen head wood floor insert that really grabs the wood. The Fast Rack then attaches to the plate in the floor via four large eyelet bolts that are tightened by hand.
We watched the install and would put it at about a six on a 1-10 scale. As always, know what you’re drilling before you drill. Fuel cells and holding tanks are beneath the floor so you must use caution. The most important thing is the measuring. It has to be dead on so the rack can be secured. After the install we grabbed the rack and shook it back and fourth and it was solid as a rock.
Mark has developed a wide variety of accessories for this system. They include rear wheel docks for bigger bikes, security bars that lock your bike to the rack and the quad link and quad post, designed to keep four wheelers secure. Now here’s the really cool part: Mark has developed this system to work in your garage and in the back of your truck. You can purchase mounting hardware so that the rack can be moved from place to place with the twist of a few bolts. No more tie down hassles for a day trip in your truck and no more triangle kick stands at home.
